There was a message on Geoff's machine from a woman who seemed to know him. "It's Phyllis," she said, but she sounded younger than any Phyllis he could imagine. Or maybe you know of someone else." Then there was a phone number, three times. Geoff put his briefcase on the table, took Brone out to whiz, got a beer and played the message again. He wrote down the key words, like a dimwitted detective: Phyllis, last week, Emily, house. The name Emily rang a distant bell, but he was sure he didn't have any students named Emily this year, thank God, since if a parent were asking him to babysit a teenage girl he'd quit his job from embarrassment.
